    Please vote to SUPPORT the resolution to fund Roosevelt and Garfield. Facilities are currently not sufficient for providing a safe and equitable education for our students and future generations of the Fruitvale community. Thank you.

    I strongly urge the board to support the resolution to fund Roosevelt and Garfield because it is 100% necessary in order to provide a our students an equitable education. Our facilities are very out of date, and this sends our students a very clear message.

    I urge the Board to support the resolution to fund Roosevelt and Garfield. Our students deserve the same level of quality facilities found in the "Hill Schools."

    I am Patty Hall, Faith In Action East Bay. I feel strongly that OUSD must include the ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION HUB at 1025 SECOND AVE. in November’s Facilities Bond Measure. OUSD hasn’t done right by vulnerable students—do the right thing now!
    The proposed hub at Second Avenue includes career technical education, wrap-around services & programming aimed at drop-out prevention & successful transition to college and career, plus admin space for programs serving students & families. The one-stop shop keeps young people in school, builds bridges from high school to career and college, disrupts the school-to-prison pipeline AND dedicates an historic OUSD site—adjacent to beauty & opportunity—to youth who most need resources & support. Board members, invest in innovations that support and prioritize under-resourced Black & Brown students. Prioritize the Alternative Education Hub at 1025 2nd Avenue.

    I urge the Board to support maximizing funding for Garfield and Roosevelt schools. These buildings rank high on the facilities master plan and would have a great impact on the San Antonio/Fruitvale, which are a growing and bustling area of the city. Thank you!

    I ask our dedicated board members to VOTE YES, YES to adopt this bond. This is the most creative solution to support our deeply under-resourced black and brown students by investing in an Alternative Education Hub at the 1025 Second Ave., CCPA and McClymonds. It is time to take our black and brown students out of the margins, to provide them the innovative community schools where they will surely thrive, to build strong and permanent connections from high school to career and college and to support their transition to adulthood.

    I strongly support the facilities bond and these important improvements for the health of students and staff. I urge you to include Roosevelt Middle School, which has a beautiful performance hall. If restored to safety, this could become an important gathering space for the Roosevelt and OUSD community in the future that will help provide an important venue for district arts celebrations and foster pride in a neighborhood which badly needs more life affirming opportunities. I also support inclusion of Melrose Leadership Academy, which is a thriving learning environment in need of improved and expanded facilities. As the director of choral music education program that serves over 10% of OUSD elementary students, I have seen many different OUSD communities, and I believe MLA really needs this support and serves families exceptionally well. Please include these important school sites in your plan, thank you!

    I support this bond to use the location and amenities of 1025 Second Ave to create opportunity for the youth who need it most. I am a parent of a child entering OUSD, and a longtime resident of Oakland. This is a historic moment and opportunity for our community and city to put in place deep structural changes that address the racial inequities and injustices that have strangled so much promise for generations. The Board can take this opportunity to put the needs of those students most impacted by racism and neglect first. This is an opportunity for the school district to put their words about creating a new culture of safety into practice. Thank you.

    I am in support of this facilities bond and ask that it include the establishment of an Alternative Education Hub at 1025 Second Ave that will:

    Offer alternative high school education programs that include wrap around social-emotional services and a career tech ed focus;

    Support young people’s transition to adult hood through programming that connects graduates to post-secondary opportunities (i.e. Laney/Peralta, apprenticeship programs, four-year colleges, etc.) and housing for transition aged youth;

    Prioritize youth who drop out and/or who graduate with no clear path to college or career, and offer on-site student/family services and other critical services from public agencies and nonprofits.

    1025 Second Ave is a safe, neutral site for all youth and located near Laney, community organizations and other resources.

    This would allow OUSD to center our most impacted, least resourced youth of color by addressing the racism and inequity they face and prioritizing their needs.

    Members of the Board, I ask you to support Melrose Leadership Academy to receive some of the funding from this proposed bond measure. I am a parent of a rising 5th and 2nd grader at Melrose. As I wrote in my comments for your June 24th meeting, the school has been split onto two campuses the last year which put a strain on families (challenges of transportation etc), teachers (harder to collaborate) and administration. Having the school on one single campus will make a significant difference. The school's campuses have major facilities needs as well including: need for air conditioning (for example, one of my children was in a classroom that was routinely above 90 degrees - in spite of parents providing 4 fans for it), need for shade on the yard, need for a lab for the middle school etc. It currently has a Facilities Conditions Index rating of 4 out of 10. Please include MLA as one of the schools to receive funds for facilities improvements. Thank you!
