Please include funding for an alt ed hub at 1025 2nd avenue in the facilities Bond being discussed. Wrap-around services are essential for the students of Alt Ed, who often need a little extra push to get to the point where they can fly on their own. If our Alt Ed students are given the extra support found in wraparound services, many will soar. These services, as an investment, will yield high future dividends for making Oakland, the Bay Area, California, and more generally, the nation, a stronger more inclusive society. Where young people are able to succeed, feel good about their lives, and increase the tax base through higher paying jobs and more purchasing power (ie home buying). This will bring about greater social, emotional, and financial health for all of us. By investing in our students Futures, we invest in ours.

I strongly support a 21st Century Alt Ed Hub at 1025 2nd Ave. that offers full-service wrap-around programs designed to serve high school students needing alt pathways to post-secondary success in college or career.I urge you to include funding for the construction of the Hub in the facilities bond in November.Hundreds of students drop out of Oakland schools yearly. Many obtain a diploma but not engaged in post-secondary education or career training to prepare for their future. The pandemic and the response to it will exacerbate the inequities and challenges these young people face.Change this by investing in the future of our students most impacted by trauma and systemic failure. This vision starts from students needs and is informed by the voices of students. The vision:career technical education, trauma informed, healing practice, supported transitions to post-secondary success, intensive wrap-around services and housing. We urge you to include funding for the Hub in November 2020 bond.

We strongly believe that the previously approved projects for Skyline High School are long overdue and that accessibility for wheelchairs, sanitary conditiins in restrooms, and plumbing/heating/air conditioning upgrades cannot wait any longer. The safety of the students and staff depends on it and the district had previously approved these projects. Please amend this measure to include these basic human necessities for our students. In light of pandemic and ongoing health and safety guidelines, it would be irresponsible, if not dangerous not to. Thank you for your support and adding these previously approved projects to the plan.

Expressing maximum support for the 2020 Bond Measure, including full allocations for Garfield Elementary and Roosevelt Middle schools. I also support the facilities planning allocation for the Alternative Education Hub, specifically at 1025 Second Avenue. OUSD has a long and durable legislative history to earmark 1025 Second Avenue for education use, dating back to 2006-2007 when State Superintendent Jack O'Connell sought to sell this and adjacent properties to developers. Originally envisioned as the Education Leadership Complex, the OUSD Board recently approved legislation that affirms this property for OUSD educational uses. A smart plan to build both programs and facilities that better serve the educational, economic, and housing needs of Dewey students, including an early college pipeline is needed now more than ever.

I am writing in support of the creation of an Alternative Education Hub, to be located at 1025 Second Avenue. I urge you to include funding for the construction of the Hub in the new facilities bond that goes to voters in November.  I strongly support the vison for a 21st Century Alternative Education Hub that offers full-service wrap around programming and is designed to serve high school students who we know will require   alternative pathways to post-secondary success, whether in college or career. This vision starts from the needs of these students and is informed by the voices of students themselves. The vision features career technical education, trauma informed and healing practice, supported transitions to post-secondary success and intensive wrap-around services, including housing.

I urge the Board to support this resolution and to use funds for the location and amenities of 1025 Second Ave to create opportunity for the youth who need it most; youth in alternative education. These youth are the most at risk for trauma, being in the juvenile justice and foster systems, and needing extra support. 1025 Second Ave is a safe, neutral location for all youth, is across the street from Laney College, close to BART and AC Transit and proximate to internship opportunities in downtown Oakland. It is surrounded by a natural environment that promotes healing and wellness, is a logical extension of the existing OUSD/Peralta educational uses. This program will specifically disrupt the school to prison pipeline by centering our most impacted, least resourced youths of Color. The population to be served is the 300+ youth who drop out and the 700+ who graduate with no "next step" to college or career. Complimentary OUSD student/family services and supports are located on-site.

SHAME ON OUSD for once again passing over Skyline High School. You're actually suggesting to renovate a kitchen at the other schools??? The restrooms at Skyline are so unhealthy and abhorrent the majority of students don't even use them. The campus is a complete dump and has been in need of renovations for over 10 years now. The portables are not ADA compliant and there is NO ventilation in the classrooms. How is sitting in a 90 degree classroom conducive to learning? I'm going to call the California Health department it's in such disrepair. If Skyline HS is not included, I will NOT vote for this Bond Measure and I will actively work to defeat it. OUSD has given the students and parents of Skyline no other choice. We will not be silent and we will not be passed over AGAIN.

I urge the Board to support the resolution to fund Roosevelt and Garfield renovations in the upcoming bond measure. All students deserve a clean and quality learning environment. In addition, teachers, staff, admin, and families need the support of the Board in this way so we can continue to make our students feel valued and respected.

Please vote YES to support this bond measure. As you know, many OUSD facilities are in dire need of repair and, as a result, our resilient students and staff have to navigate many daily challenges (infestations, leaking roofs and hazardous water damage, unbearably hot classrooms, etc...) that should not be part of a successful schooling experience. I look forward to the day when the students and staff at Roosevelt, Garfield, and the other prioritized schools feel a sense of pride entering their school because it is healthy and safe learning environment.

It is vital that both Garfield and Roosevelt are included in the upcoming bond measure. Do you know that Roosevelt has the largest auditorium in OUSD, and that the balcony has been closed for years because it is not earthquake safe? It is long overdue to remedy this and restore this treasure to the community. Please do the right thing! Thank you!
