Greetings, I am Zakiya Folami Jendayi. I have taught in the Bay Area in both middle and high schools and at three of the four community colleges. I know from first hand
experiences that an ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION HUB can save Black & Brown Lives by providing a special educational path which can prepare them for college or Entrepreneurship, rather than the pipeline to prison where over two MILLION BLACK MEN are already locked up!!!
I feel strongly that OUSD must include the ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION HUB at 1025 SECOND AVE in November’s Facilities Bond Measure. OUSD hasn’t done right by vulnerable students—do the right thing now!

YOU HAVE THE POWER TO HELP SAVE BLACK & BROWN LIVES NOW!!! WE PRAY YOU DO THE RIGHTEOUS THING NOW!!!!
GOD BLESS ALL OF YOU !!!!

I am a parent of two OUSD scholars. Both Garfield and Roosevelt are our feeder schools. I want to be able to have my children attend their feeder schools given that they both are within .5 mile radius from our home. However, I am with fear that both schools are not safe enough for my children. Please consider funding both schools.

As an Oakland citizen of African descent with four generations rooted in this city, my family and I are all products of OUSD. Our district has been lacking in resources for decades. This reality disproportionately affects Black and Brown families who are already disadvantaged due to the effects of systemic racism. We need to Close the Gap! This Alternative Educational Hub would be a tangible and practical solution to this deeply rooted problem here in Oakland. Black & Brown Students Matter!!!

I strongly support a 21st Century Alt Ed Hub at 1025 2nd Ave. that offers full-service wrap-around programs designed to serve high school students needing alt pathways to post-secondary success in college or career.I urge you to include funding for the construction of the Hub in the facilities bond in November.Hundreds of students drop out of Oakland schools yearly. Many obtain a diploma but not engaged in post-secondary education or career training to prepare for their future. The pandemic and the response to it will exacerbate the inequities and challenges these young people face.Change this by investing in the future of our students most impacted by trauma and systemic failure. This vision starts from students needs and is informed by the voices of students. The vision:career technical education, trauma informed, healing practice, supported transitions to post-secondary success, intensive wrap-around services and housing. We urge you to include funding for the Hub in November 2020 bond.

Roosevelt and Garfield need to be two projects included and prioritized in the November Bond Measure Election. The safety and well being of our youth and families are at risk everyday we walk into the building. Please help both schools be a safe and adequate learning environment for our San Antonio Community.

As a retired psychologist serving Oakland for over 40 years, my specialty was working with trauma survivors. Particularly, in juvenile facilities and foster homes, the need for comprehensive mental health services grows greater every year. And wrap around services are poorly funded or don't exist. One of my primary concerns is for the 18 year olds who "age out" of foster care without access to essential services necessary for their very survival. They need every kind of support...mental health counseling, life skills and job training, education, advocacy, medical care, employment...EVERYTHING including basic food, clothing and shelter. They are tough and resilient young adults, not to mention smarter than my old computer challenged brain ever could be. They deserve to thrive, not just survive. We need to do more.

Good Evening Board of Directors and Staff Leaders, my name is Andre Spearman and I am a leader with Faith In Action Eastbay's Education for Liberation Committee. I am speaking in support of the creation of an Alternative Education Hub at 1025 2nd Ave. I believe this idea hits many of the critical markers indicated in the Bond grading system. It addresses equity in the distribution of Bond Funds for Alternative education, it serves a city-wide community of young people, it can become a model for collaboration with other youth serving entities and it sends a message to students who learn differently, students who may not have a post-graduation plan (estimated about 700 plus) or students who drop out for many reasons (estimated at 300 plus a year). I am hoping you will invest in this project and demonstrate what equity looks like when others may be giving lip service. Please invest in the future of students who are often not thought about and need caring adult leaders.

Eliminate the $71.5m teardown of Cole if you want this bond to pass. The poll clearly did not favor spending a bunch of money on administration bldg, poll question about "repurposing" an unused school site was intentionally misleading. You are not repurposing a school, you are tearing it down and building a brand new building. If you are to be at Cole, you should have a plan to adapt the existing building at a much much lower cost. Also, the community survey resulted in the following top choices in your three buckets: McClymonds, Garfield, Claremont, Roosevelt, Skyline, Laurel CDC, Elmhurst, Howard and CCPA, total of $350 million. I would add the Piedmont kitchen to that for another $2m and the $5m planning for 1025 Adult Ed. You should also set aside a significant amount of money to address inequity at majority Black schools and the remaining $200+ million should be used at schools with significant need that serve our most vulnerable students. You need time to make this decision.

I, Dianne Doss, as a longtime resident of Oakland, as a parent of OUSD graduates, as a former teacher and as an agent for positive opportunities and rehabilitation for at risk youth, wholeheartedly SUPPORT the creation of an Alternative Education Hub to be located at 1025 2nd Avenue.

The proposed hub is to include career technical education, wrap-around services, programming aimed at drop-out prevention with successful transition to college and/or career, plus admin space for programs serving students & families. The one-stop shop will encourage young people to not only stay in school, it will serve as a bridge from high school to career and/or college and, thereby disrupt the school-to-prison pipeline. It will also dedicate a historic OUSD site—adjacent to beauty & opportunity—to youth who most need resources & support.

I therefore URGE you to include funding plans for this project in the November 2020 Facilities Bond Measure. Our at risk youth NEED and DESERVE your support!!!

I am asking the Board to support the establishment of 1025 2nd Ave as a necessary step in improving the OUSD response to equitable education. The Grand Jury Report shows a failure to effectively address the inequities at OUSD, The pressure put on principals and teachers to pass underserving students and have it feel as a necessary tix to give students a degree, is like preparing for a marathon in an unsafe environment, and when the student breaks a leg, the administration feels good about sending him/her out to the marathon with crutches and feeling good about it A bit of a stretch in comparison, but OUSD needs to address and revamp it's education system and 1025 is a proper start. I know the Board does good work. Now please make it Graat Work! Thank you.

My name is Angie Noel. I’ve lived in Oakland for decades, long enough to have lived through—and been part of--pivotal moments in history that helped bend the arc of the universe toward justice. In those rare moments, everyone, especially policymakers like you on the board, have an opportunity to take transformative steps in their domain, to push the dial of justice forward where they can. That’s how I see your much needed vote to include the Alternative Education Hub in Nov’s facilities bond—it’s not an idea whose time has come. IT’S DESPERATELY OVERDUE. AND YOU WON’T HAVE ANOTHER CHANCE LIKE THIS TO SERVE OUSD’S MOST UNDERSERVED KIDS. You & I know it. We know vulnerable kids have gone wanting in OUSD & that the Hub can be what they need. Career education, bridges to college, wrap-around services, housing, partnerships with allied nonprofits like Peralta Colleges, a safe, healing environment on 2nd Avenue. THAT’S WHY I URGE YOU TO MAKE HISTORY. PRIORITIZE THE HUB. DO THE RIGHT THING.

On behalf of Fresh Lifelines for Youth (FLY), I am writing this comment in support of the creation of an Alternative Education Hub, to be located at 1025 2nd Avenue. We urge the Board to move forward with the November Facilities Bond Measure and to include the Hub as a priority. As you know, hundreds of students are PUSHED OUT (not drop out) of Oakland schools every year. Many more obtain a diploma but are not engaged in post-secondary education or career training to prepare for their future. The current pandemic and the response to it will only exacerbate the inequities and challenges these young people face. But we can change this by choosing to invest in the future of our students who are most impacted by trauma and systemic failure now. We need to think bigger, and we need to be collaborative and creative. The vision of the Alt Ed Hub does just that and is informed by the voices of students themselves. Let's listen to those we are working so hard to serve, our young people!
