As a teacher at Korematsu Discovery Academy, I know first hand that our students deserve more support, not less. Instead of cutting student programs and laying off the most vulnerable employees in OUSD, the School Board needs to get serious about restructuring central administration, get a handle on growing consulting costs, and stop hiding needed funds in books and supplies. Our students and staff deserve more.

I am opposed to cutting funding from any student services and from classified, SEIU staff. If you must cut the budget, cut from the top. Cut the bloated programs and six figure salaried positions that don’t serve our students.

I'm so dumbfounded by this district's choices. As a M/M SDC teacher in an Oakland school, I work with many SEIU employees. In a time when kids are glued to video games, is cutting libraries really a wise decision? I realize this district's main office has gotten itself into one heII of a pickle, but why solve the problem at the expense of the the community?? What ever happened to cutting the people DOWNTOWN who don't put their heart and soul into educating youth and shaping the future????

As a 23 year OUSD teacher now at Sojourner Truth, I ask that Instead of cutting student programs and laying off the most vulnerable employees in OUSD, the School Board needs to get to restructure the central administration, get a handle on growing consulting costs, and stop hiding needed funds in books and supplies.
Put the money to people, programs and supplies that directly come in contact with students in schools- not in superfluous district administrators and consultants.

As a teacher at Thornhill. I know first hand that our students deserve more support, not less. Instead of cutting student programs and laying off the most vulnerable employees in OUSD, the School Board needs to get to finally get serious about restructuring central administration, give the upper administration a pay cut, get a handle on ever growing consulting costs, spend restricted funds first, and stop hiding needed funds in books and supplies.

Instead of cutting student programs and laying off the most vulnerable employees in OUSD, the School Board needs to get to finally get serious about restructuring central administration, get a handle on growing consulting costs, and stop hiding needed funds in books and supplies. I oppose any layoff of classified positions. Already we are short custodians.

My students need their ISS to assist with small group instruction & to go with them to electives.

As a 4th year Special Education teacher with 5 years as a para and SEIU member under my belt, I know first hand that our students deserve more support, not less! Instead of cutting student programs and laying off the most vulnerable employees, the School Board needs to get serious about restructuring central administration, get a handle on growing consulting costs, DEFUND OUSD OPD, and stop hiding needed funds in books and supplies. THIS SHOULD NOT BE AN ISSUE. WE NEED TO INVEST IN OUR KIDS.

Too many people doing meaningless jobs. The kids need teachers not administrators. Cut the administrations, cut the technology, and go back to paper and pencils and let the teachers teach the kids! I would guess that most of the money is spent on administration and technology and cut backs are in the classrooms. Bureaucracy is way out of hand in so many places besides education.

As a 25 year educator in my first year teaching in CA and OUSD, I believe I he facts speak the reality that the district has or had the funds and continues to spend them without prioritizing student needs.
Advice can be taken from surrounding successful public school districts that put student needs first: smaller class sizes, fair wages to keep quality teachers, more needed services and support and STOP padding greedy pockets.

Instead of cutting student programs and laying off the most vulnerable employees in OUSD, the School Board needs to finally get serious about restructuring central administration, get a handle on growing consulting costs, and stop hiding needed funds in books and supplies. Cutting other programs is unacceptable and we should not be blamed as part of the problem. We are the solution!

Oakland teacher 1967 to 1997, sub teacher from 1999 to 2017 - Walked picket lines in four strikes. Oakland taxpayer and voter. Appalled by proliferation of corporate charter schools for profit and people in power trying to destroy public schools piecemeal. Plan to help Oakland replace these destroyers on the board. Fire all consultants. Teachers know what they and their students need. In the recent strike I heard the chant, "Chop from the top!" We chanted that in the strikes of 1987 and 1997.
