F.-2 24-2330 Presentation to the Measures B, J, and Y Independent Citizens' School Facilities Bond Oversight Committee, by Chief Systems and Services, or Designee, of the perspective revisions to the Measure Y Spending Plan (First Read) as of October 2024.
Please do not take Measure Y Funding from Skyline, our installations are old and in need of reparation. We need the funding, our students deserve proper facilities to conduct their learning! I teach in Room 27, I have four sinks in the room, two are not in conditions to be used, part of the flooring linoleum is peeling away. The ceiling is falling in pieces, my Internet is spotty, I never know if I will have connection today. The roots of the tree outside my back door are pushing the entire building, there are roots coming out the pipes of one of my sinks. I am unable to lock my door from inside, in case of an assailant in the building I would have to risk my life to lock the door to protect my students.
Leave the Measure Y Funding alone! Our students need it!
Please do not repurpose our Measure Y funding. I have been at skyline for 8 years, and love and respect the community, but it does not feel that OUSD respects us.
I have had ceiling tiles fall during class, water running down the walls, the toilet down the hall overflow sewage into my classroom during class, have extension cords duct taped throughout my room, and have just an overall feeling of neglect and disrespect that is shared amongst students and staff because our facilities do not support a feeling of support and respect.
We are a positive, robust campus that deserves to be invested in- please keep our measure Y funding that was promised to us!
Maintaining funding for Skyline's facilities is essential because, as Maslow's hierarchy of needs highlights, students' basic needs must be met to enable effective learning. When students have clean, safe, and functional spaces, they feel secure, which is foundational to focusing on higher-order learning. If facilities are neglected, students may face health and safety risks that detract from their ability to engage fully in academic tasks. For schools to support students' well-being and success, investing in well-maintained, high-quality facilities is not just ideal but necessary.
Please OUSD do not repurpose Skyline's Measure Y funding. Our facilities are in bad shape and in need of long term investment. Please support the long-term health of our community by keeping the promises you have made and committing to additional, substantive investments in our campus in the near future. We deserve climate controlled classrooms to learn with out mice, ceilings that don't leak, clean bathrooms, safe infrastructure that is properly maintained for both students and workers, and much more.
