As the parent of a future OUSD student, I am writing to ask that you VOTE YES on the Reparations for Black Students Resolution. This is a critical step in repairing and making amends for the many years of divestment, and taking steps to support Black students, families, schools, OUSD staff, and therefore our community as a whole, to thrive.

I am a parent of white students in OUSD, and I strongly support the Reparations Resolution. Everyone in the OUSD system as well as our larger civic community will benefit from greater equity in our schools. I also believe that addressing the history of unfairness and beginning to repair it will draw students and families back to our public schools, improving everyone's educational outcomes.

As a high school teacher in OUSD for the past 10 years, I’ve seen first-hand the ways that Black students are systematically underserved and then pushed out of our schools. We are long overdue for an acknowledgement of this grave injustice, coupled with concrete and actionable steps toward justifying it. The Black Students Resolution provides just that. Please honor your commitment to serving Oakland’s students and VOTE YES on the Reparations for Black Students Resolution - to repair the harm caused by decades of disinvestment - and to reinvest in Black students, families, schools, and staff in OUSD.

I'm writing to urge a YES vote on the Reparations for Black Students Resolution. I am an OUSD parent, a former OUSD teacher, a life-long Oaklander and a former OUSD student myself. The disinvestment from our Black children and neighborhoods is decades long and each one of us in the community is responsible for the harms done and for the significant reinvestment necessary to right these wrongs.

Please VOTE YES on the Reparations for Black Students Resolution – to repair the harm caused by decades of disinvestment – and to reinvest in Black students, families, schools, and staff in OUSD. I am an East Bay resident and community-based educator of 10+ years, having worked in afterschool and school-day programs in OUSD for a number of years, including at Ralph J. Bunche Academy and Dewey Academy. I strongly encourage members of the board to support this tangible strategy to support Black students and their families and begin to undo the long history of harm and anti-Blackness that schooling has caused, and as such, must address and redress.
