Please VOTE YES on the Reparations for Black Students Resolution! Systemic violence and oppressive policies that have created generational disadvantages within Black community must be addressed and actively undone within OUSD. Black students, families, schools, and staff in OUSD deserve to thrive and to be invested in!

In an effort to recognize the wealth and race inequalities that grow wider with each passing day of the pandemic, we ask the Oakland school board to do whatever necessary to support those hardest hit; black children. Support them now.

If Black lives truly matter and if Black History month means more than lip service - it’s time to do something comprehensive to support Black students NOW - that actually results in all Black students achieving. There has NEVER been a solution to match the scale of the problem. There has NEVER been a comprehensive, multi-year, systemic plan and significant resources to protect and prioritize Black children.

We demand you immediately take BOLD action and Stop making excuses. Racism will always find an excuse to maintain the status quo. The system will always find excuses to not give Black students what they deserve and what they are owed. “It’s too complicated, it’s too much. Not now. We need incremental change” Either Black students matter or they don’t.

The Reparations for Black Students resolution is long overdue, and should be seen as a first step towards increased equity and the fight against systemic racism in education. Black students are attacked and neglected in so many ways - it just blew my mind as an outsider coming to Oakland from the Middle East. From policing, to cultural "otherizing", to outright racist remarks, discrimination in grading, and a myriad other forms. Business as usual is unacceptable when students of colors are treated like this every day.

We here at the California Charter School Association agree we must focus on the critically important issue of education equity for underserved communities, invest additional resources, and promote policies that improve outcomes and opportunities for Oakland’s Black students.
All parents should have the freedom to decide what educational option works best for their child. We all belong to the same public school family, working hard to serve the unique needs of each and every student in the district. However, this common ground should unite us, not pit us against each other.
Since 2013, Oakland’s nonprofit charter public schools have served an increasingly larger number of Black students, growing from 2,630 to 3,403 in 2020.
We urge you to work with Black leaders, teachers, and parents at both nonprofit charter public schools and traditional public schools in Oakland to draft a resolution that meets the needs of all of the Black children in the city.

OUSD's sole focus should be getting student back into in person learning. That should be it's only
    priority.

As an OUSD teacher and parent I 100% support reparations for our black students and their families. As a community we talk a good equity game but we need to take more direct actions to address inequities. I urge the board to pass this resolution.

As an OUSD parent, I urge the Board of Directors to pass the Reparations for Black Students Resolution. This is a necessary first step toward repairing and making amends for the harm caused by decades of divestment from Black communities and the schools that serve them. It's time for OUSD to reinvest in Black students, families, staff, and schools.

We need to actively and fully support reparations for black students. We need proactive measures to accompany banning cops from schools, and whatnot. We need reparations for all black people in Oakland and this is a great way to start. -Hannah, an OUSD educator

I strongly support the Reparations for Black Students Resolution - to repair the harm caused by decades of disinvestment - and to reinvest in Black students, families, schools, and staff in OUSD. Other districts have successfully created similar policies, and we can too. This campaign can not wait, our students can not wait. Please vote yes.
