We cannot fix the ignorance of our past/present. This will take time. However, we now have a chance to make some reparation for what was wronged in America for centuries towards our black brotherhood. I support the black student resolution!

Please vote YES for Reparations for Black Students. The school system as a whole already does not serve students in the ways they need. Black students are even less served in our education system. All the recent school closures and mergers have hurt Black students, like our students at Roots International Academy. SERVE BLACK STUDENTS THE WAY THE DESERVE.

I am an OUSD teacher on a leave of absence. Previously I taught in historically black schools and witnessed first hand the pain caused by underfunding, structural racism, and displacement from closures.

Please VOTE YES on the Reparations for Black Students Resolution – to repair the harm caused by decades of disinvestment – and to reinvest in Black students, families, schools, and staff in OUSD.

Please make our Black students whole. My Black children both attended OUSD schools and we're irreparably harmed by the lack of needed services.

    Good evening,
My name is Cherri Murphy and I am an Interfaith minister with East Bay Alliance for a Sustainable Economy. I am writing on behalf of agenda item S.-1 21-0194 Adoption by the Board of Education of Resolution No. 2021-0037. Reparations for Black Students is about the unfinished legacy of ending human suffering. One that leaves no child behind. I am in agreement with the Black members of the Oakland Unified School District board of education calling for reparations for Black students in the district. A call to address centuries of slavery and institutionalized racism against Black Americans. Our students are owed a quality education and so is the community. We know that when there is an evisceration of resources it affects a student’s academic performance and quality of life. I urge you to pass this resolution this evening. Thank you, Minister Cherri Murphy

The School board really needs to consider that a lot of parents left OUSD and went Charter due to a genuine lack of trust in the OUSD system after years of dropping ball. This resolution would begin to build the bridge back into OUSD !
I’m counting on you! So my son can become a OUSD Student in the future!!!!

"There is not one Black family in OUSD that hasn’t experienced the pain of anti-Black racism in our schools. Now is the time to look at the solutions from the Black community and invest in the remaining Black students so that every child can achieve. For decades, Black students and families have experienced significant barriers and anti-Black racist structures in OUSD schools, and have suffered from a lack of investment in their success. Over the last twenty years, through school closures in Black neighborhoods and the gentrification it has spurred, the over-criminalization of Black youth, and the failure to adequately resource schools serving Black families, two-thirds of Black students have been forced out of the District. The only way to address decades of disinvestment is to begin to heavily reinvest in Black students and families AND in the development of Black Teachers and Black School Leaders."
