As a principal at Life Academy, I am in support of maintaining this contract with teach for America… Their hiring pool has become increasingly diverse and high-quality over time, and we rely on them to ensure that we are fully staffed to serve students at a high-level. Over the years, this organization has done some smart work to select with focal schools, who have structures to maintain and develop young teachers (like Life Academy). These folks stay teachers in Oakland, and that is beneficial for my school and beyond.
Hello, my name is Raghad. I’m 14 and in 8th grade. I am an Arab Muslim OUSD student. My friends and I want to learn about Palestine in our classroom because it is something we should really teach other people about. Not teaching much about this in school is a form of discrimination because it is important for all students my age to learn about and a part of history and somebody’s culture.
I met with Director Thompson last Thursday. I would like to know what happened and why the resolution is not on the agenda. I want to ask you to put it on the agenda or have a special meeting. Please vote yes on a permanent ceasefire resolution and put it on the agenda.
The Reparations for Black Students resolution was passed on March 24, 2021. Since then, OUSD has dismantled the Task Force with the support of some board members. OUSD has failed to make any reports on the status of Black students and thus not implemented ANY of the work that the resolution requires. It’s 2024. There are no increases in investments to Black students without community demand. The opportunity gap between Black students remains just as wide as in 2021. Board, what will it take for you to implement YOUR resolution? How much longer will Black students be subjected to inequitable conditions and threatened with school closures from low performance the district has done little to rectify?!
