V.-5 21-1996 Adoption by the Board of Education of Resolution 2122-0073 - Authorizing Use of Graydon Exception to Public Bidding for Nutrition Services Food Contract with Revolution Foods, Inc., and Approving Nutrition Services Food Contract with Revolution Foods, Inc., Oakland, CA, for the latter's preparation, packaging, and delivery of supper meals as required for the Child and Adult Care Food Program, for the term August 26, 2021, through December 31, 2021, in an amount not to exceed $245,000.00.
AFSCME is not in agreement with the District contracting out our jobs. This work belongs to our permanent nutrition services unit members, yet the District is willing to spend $245,000 to contract out our work. If the contract is approved, the lowest paid employees in the District (3-hour nutrition services employees, annual income averaging $10,000) will be deprived of the opportunity to work and earn additional income. These are the same employees that have been on the frontline since the COVID pandemic. Many of them are the parents and sole providers of OUSD students. The contract shows total disregard to our hardworking and dedicated nutrition services unit members and their families. Remember, the new Central Kitchen was built to produce more meals and to fully service the District's food nutrition program, this includes the Supper Program. AFSCME was not afforded an opportunity to negotiate this matter and if the contract is approved, we will file charges against the District.
How is it possible that we have spent $70 million plus to create a state of the art Central Kitchen and we cannot prepare hot meals for student suppers? Outsourcing to private companies is not the answer, and our students deserve better and healthier foods than they offer.
