Please support our kids and vote to open ALL OUSD schools, K-12, in-person this fall. At this point, all teachers, staff and older kids will be vaccinated and all adults in the community will be eligible for vaccination as well. Additionally, new CDC guidelines allow for 3 feet distancing which will accommodate more kids in the classrooms. At this point, nothing short of full-time reopening in the fall will be considered a failure to our kids and will have a continued negative impact on their emotional and educational well-being. We need this commitment from our school board now!

As an OUSD staff person, AND parent, I am writing to request an option for full days for students. Because as staff I'm going to be required to work a full day, but my kindergartner is only going to be offered a few hours of in person class a week. I'm not clear how to make that work. Working parents really need full days. Not to mention it seems actually safer to me to have the kids in one contained 24-29 person group, with easy contact tracing, as opposed to myriad other childcare arrangements for the rest of the week and coming together for short periods of time sharing germs much more broadly across the community. I appreciate the hard work you are doing to figure this out, but I'd really like OUSD to consider a plan much closer to Berkeley's for the sake of our kids and working families.

We need all grades, K-12 back in school this fall for in person instruction. Every day, we see restaurants, gyms, sports events and shopping all reopening. School should not be last on the list. Our kids have had one full year of remote education. In AP classes, our kids have been told they learned only half of the material that is necessary to take the exam. In person schooling is safe and we need to make our kids a priority.

Anything less than 5 days a week for all grades is not enough. While I understand that the process may need to be phased in over time, the end result should not be optional. We must have 5 days a week for high schoolers or they will fall further behind. Minimesters did not work this year and should not be continued. Conceding to union positions that students must be 6ft apart even when that is not required by Alameda County Public Health guidelines for school reopening is not acceptable. OUSD must stand up for the students and get them back in school.

Please reopen almost 4 years ago

Please vote to open all schools, K-12, this fall for 5 days/week learning. Teachers, adults and older kids will be vaccinated, and the new CDC guidelines allow 3 feet distancing, which will accommodate more students per class. We NEED to get the kids back in school asap! Also, I urge you to resume the regular block schedule with NO MORE minimesters, as they did not deliver quality education to our children, and OUSD students have fallen behind students in other public school districts. If families do not want to send their kids in-person this fall, they can opt out and stay in distance learning, but there is no reason all of the kids need to suffer through another online year. It has taken a tremendous socio-emotional toll on our family, and we cannot do another year of distance learning with such a sparse curriculum.

We are failing kids in Oakland by not getting them back in schools, full-time, in person. PLEASE get our high schoolers and middle schoolers back in the classroom. They are losing hope about this city, and this school district. 5 days a week/ full days for the start of the school year in August is absolutely essential. PLEASE DO NOT fail our kids.

We are failing our children. They have missed an entire year of education which will have life long impact. We need 5 days/week in person learning for elementary students now, and a commitment to full-time reopening in August.

Thank you so much for setting a return date for elementary schools. Please advocate for a return to full time (5 days/week) in person learning as soon as possible for all students, guided by clear and reasonable safety measures. Thank you!

    Dear Board Members,

Please vote to implement the maximum number of in-person teaching hours possible for each grade and each school. It is incumbent upon you to get our kids back on campus full-time or as close to full time as possible right away! Thank you for your consideration.
