My name is Park Guthrie. I am a co-founder of Schools for Climate Action and a former OUSD Garden-Education Specialist. OUSD's climate action resolution is the most powerful climate action resolution I have seen. I have tracked nearly 100 from 16 different states. Thank you for using the words "climate neglect", for calling on Congress to act, for setting carbon-neutrality targets, and for naming the disproportionate impact of the climate crisis and fossil fuel pollution on BIPOC communities and children. You set a high bar for other education leaders to follow. Were just 5% of education leaders to follow your lead, it could drive a paradigm shift that would move us closer to hitting social tipping points for a stable climate: https://www.pnas.org/content/117/5/2354#ref-7 I encourage you to reach out to colleagues at the CSBA, NSBA, and NASS to encourage them to break climate justice silence. All young people benefit from your climate leadership. Thank you!

My name is Nancy, a lead teacher from Schools for Climate Action. I am writing in support of the Climate Emergency Action Resolution. As a teacher, I am a mandated reporter, and when I see harm to students I must report it by law. I already see the harms caused by climate change in my students- whether it's the mental health aspects of a constant worry about their future or the very palpable trauma of fleeing a climate-induced wildfire. Our students understand climate science, and they know that bold, meaningful action is needed to mitigate the worst effects of the climate crisis. You, as the school board are charged with the health and safety of students, and I can't think of a more existential threat than climate change. And action is needed now to prevent the worst impacts.
    Please pass this resolution today.
