Police don't make our children feel safer. Let's redirect the money for more support and mental health staff, restorative justice resources, food and nutrition, and teacher support.

Policing children is not how we nurture their educational, social, emotional, or spiritual growth. Instead invest these resources into adequately caring for and supporting youth, not perpetuating the systemically racist school to prison pipeline.

This is a vital move toward stepping out of our racist ways of teaching children. Spend the money on mental health, nurses, guidance counselors, and early childhood education.

I support this resolution because no student should have to go to school in fear and shame. The police aren't protecting kids they are scaring them, and distracting them from their learning. Maybe you can see arresting or detaining a student as a solution but it's only temporary and really unnecessary what we really need is more money towards mental health workers to get to the root of the problems kids are facing. School should be a safe haven and not a prison.

There is less than zero reason for cops to be in schools. They don't make schools safer, they make them more dangerous to children and they build a school-to-prison pipeline that should not be there. Guess who this hurts? Black and brown children. Do you believe in justice? STOP CRIMINALIZING KIDS! STOP SPENDING MONEY ON COPS IN SCHOOLS and invest that money in children and families!!

As an OUSD alum and a current District 1 resident, I strongly urge the board to vote in favor of the George Floyd Resolution to Eliminate the Oakland School Police Department. Police have no place in our schools, and amid the budget cuts the district is facing due to COVID, it is unconscionable to consider cutting teachers or support staff when we could eliminate the police from schools. Jody London in particular, I know that you are concerned with environmental issues. Having police in schools is a climate issue: It creates a toxic environment where students struggle to learn and feel safe. It also punishes and polices those Oakland youth who are currently leading the push against the climate crisis in our communities. I believe that youth will lead the way, and the best thing we can do to support them is to create environments where they can learn and thrive with safety. Please pass the George Floyd Resolution with no amendments! We will remember in November if you do not.

I am an resident of Oakland's District 1 and I strongly urge the Board passes this resolution with no amendments. I grew up in Oakland and attended all public schools here, as my own kids are now doing. As a white family, we have not had to experience the fear and unjust consequences of police presence in schools, which merely underscores how unequitable the system is. We are uniformly opposed to police in schools and support the George Floyd Resolution (with no amendments!!) and call on the OUSD Board to do the right thing and cut ties with OPD.

I am in support of the elimination of the OAK PD in Oakland Schools. Our children need support via counselors, nurses, and mentors vs feeling the threat of being judged as a criminal. It constantly seems overlooked that these are children still developing their minds and place in society. Please review your commitment to safety in schools and strategize a better way through support, programs, and education.

I am the parent of a rising 2nd grader at an OUSD school in district 1 and I fully support the George Floyd Resolution as is, with no amendments. OSPD officers make my white son feel less safe in his school. His teachers, principal, school support staff and, especially, his school's therapist are who make him feel safe at school. All OUSD students need access to mental and behavioral health support staff in their schools. Let's use the money currently being spent on OSPD to fund more mental health staff.

Our students don't need police in their schools scaring them, intimidating them. Schools should be safe for all students, not a place for fear. Invest instead in counselors. Please vote in favor of eliminating police from our schools.
I stand with the Black Organizing Project, and the Oakland youth.

As an Oakland Tech parent, I am deeply concerned about the coming recession and the cuts to critical programs at school sites. I ask you to pass the George Floyd resolution without amendments, and invest the funds in behavioral health and supports for the highest needs students.

Policing has not made our campuses safer. The notion that they have is rooted in misguided ideology of how to protect and serve justice. As schools face increasingly limited resources, this is not where our dollars should go. We should be uplifting our students.

As a resident of Oakland, youth organizer, former public school educator and community member, I urge you to remove police from our schools. By divesting from police and reinvesting that money into programs that support the learning, growth and development of our youth, we are practicing preventative and alternative justice, keeping students of color out of jail and providing them with the future they deserve. If you truly care about the well-being of these students, you will end the contract between OPD and OUSD.
