I was appalled to read Director Hinton-Hodge’s demeaning comments about Gema Quetzal. However I wasn’t surprised, as Director Hinton-Hodge has long been a mouthpiece for the charter industry. The Board has a responsibility to censure her and demand a public apology to Gema, who is an outstanding example ofhow our public schools nurture and support excellence!

The Board should censure member Hinton-Hodge for demeaning and insulting not only our brilliant Gema Quetzal, but all students. That's the young woman who often had the most appropriate and intelligent responses of anyone on the dias, and who has represented us well on the State Board. That's the young woman who will graduate from Life Academy and attend Stanford on a full scholarship. Shame on Director Hinton-Hodge. If the other Directors have any decency, they will demand a public apology.

Gema Quetzal Cardenas represents the best of Oakland and its schools. Her appointment affirmed that. To have a Director of the School Board diminish her accomplishment, in any way, to a public figure is a violation of decency and her position as an advocate for our students. While Gema needs no validation from Director Hinton-Hodge to continue to be the strong woman that she is, a public apology is what is needed here.

I'm writing in support of Gema, who must be reeling after reading the inappropriate comments by Dir. Hinton-Hodge. It is incredibly inappropriate to demean a student who has been serving so sensibly on the Oakland School Board. Gema, when other directors ignored students, played Angry Bird while they talked and cried, and literally took the mic from student hands, you listened to students/teachers/community members and advocated for us. Thank you, and keep your head high. We support you.
